HARLEY-DAVIDSON, XA Boxer Shaft Drive, US-Army (Prototyp)Hubraum 750 ccm, 23 PS, Baujahr 1942 Getriebe 4-Gang mit Kardanantrieb,Rohrrahmen gefedert und Springergabel mit Stossdämpfer Diese XA mit Boxermotor und Kardanantrieb ist eine Rarität und vermutlich die einzige in der Schweiz. Der Motor und die Mechanik sind revidiert. Obwohl die WLA ein gutes Allzweck-Militärmotorrad war, erbat die US-Army von Harley Davidson eine Kardanmaschine. Harley wandte sich in Richtung des Feindes, um Ideen zu bekommen. Die BMW R71 wurde tatsächlich kopiert. Eine Testreihe von 1000 XA Maschinen wurden hergestellt, ebenso eine Prototypreihe von Indian Kardanmaschinen (siehe Indian Modell 841). Es war so geplant, dass die bessere der Maschinen in grosser Stückzahl von der Armee bestellt werden sollte. Keines der beiden Motorräder entsprach den Vorstellungen der US-Army, welche stattdessen den Willys-Jeep als Frontfahrzeug bevorzugte, aber auch weitere WLA Motorräder bestellte, und so das kurze Leben der XA beendete. The Harley-Davidson XA was born. XA stands for eXperimental Army, and 1000 units were built for evaluation purposes. By the time the run was completed, however, the Army decided that there were going with the GP, or what we now know as the Jeep. Harley was already making a similar bike for the military called the WLA, and that was determined to be sufficient for the basic motorcycle usage needed by the military. The XA featured a 740 ccm flat twin (boxer) engine that produced 23 horsepower. This was good for a top speed of 65 miles per hour. Interesting tidbit of info from the AMA Hall of Fame Museum: because the boxer twin puts cylinders out into the air stream, the oil temp of the XA engine was 100 degrees (Fahrenheit) cooler than the standard Harley V-Twin of the time.
